I Have Never Boarded My Dog Before, What Can I Do To Make Sure He Is Ok While I’m Gone?
Our dogs are our babies. Of course we worry about the care they receive when we are away. At Citizen Canine, we not only run the premiere dog kennel in Oakland, we are also dog owners. We understand and appreciate the dedication you have for your dog(s). So what can you do beforehand to prepare your dog for a positive boarding experience?
Socialize
Doggy daycare and/or extended boarding can be a stressful experience for a dog who is not used to being around other people. Prepare him by inviting friends and family over often before his stay with us. If behavior problems persist, you might consider signing him up for our obedience class. If you are going to be away for an extended period, consider letting your dog experience a few mini-visits with us ahead of time. This will allow him to slowly get used to us and his new environment.
Diet
A sudden change in diet can cause health problems for your dog. When preparing for his stay with us, be sure to pack his favorite dry food and snacks. The familiar favorites will keep him healthy and also be a comfort to him while you are away.
Vaccinate
Current vaccinations are important not only for the health and safety of your dog but also for the other dogs being boarded. Give us a short health history that includes any recent illnesses and medications. If your dog will be taking medication while in our care, be sure to include clear dosing instructions.
Relax
Just like people, dogs sense when we are stressed. As difficult as separation can be for dogs and their families, do everything you can to remain calm when it is time for the two of you to part ways. Relax in the knowledge that your dog is receiving top-notch care in the best dog kennel in Oakland.
